Trinity's Young Americans for Freedom Commemorate 9/11

On Friday, September 10th, Trinity’s chapter of the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) assembled to honor the 20th anniversary of 9/11. As part of the YAF Never Forget project, the students placed 2,977 flags on the lawn at the Trinity campus to memorialize the lives lost on September 11, 2001. An additional four flags were placed to honor the four lives lost in the attack in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. This year, they added another 13 flags for the lives lost recently in the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance, prayer, the National Anthem, and the playing of Taps. There was also a retelling of the timeline of that fateful day and what happened to the four aircraft that were hijacked. First responders and military personnel were recognized, as well as the 14 Trinity alumni who are currently serving in the armed forces.

US Congressman and Trinity dad, Mike Garcia, made remarks on the significance of remembering 9/11. “We saw those images in real time; it was all just so hard to believe. We thought it was make-believe; we thought it was something out of a movie and that this couldn’t possibly be happening to us,” said Rep. Mike Garcia during his address at Trinity. “And so, 20 years later, as we are still fighting this global war on terror, it is imperative that we don’t forget because about a quarter of our population wasn’t even alive when 9/11 happened.”

Toward the end of his speech, Garcia thanked the Trinity student organization that organized Friday’s event, saying the next generation should remember the tragedies the country has suffered, but also take pride in how it has prevailed.

“As hard as all of that is to believe, and as evil as our adversaries are,” said Garcia, now becoming emotional, “we are part of the best experiment that this globe has ever seen in the form of the United States of America.”
