Trinity regularly presents evidence for the Christian faith, so that students graduate knowing what they believe and why they believe it. Today, Upper School students attended a Scientific Apologia Symposium. Jonathan Noyes from Stand to Reason (STR.org) came to Trinity to present what he has learned about Intelligent Design.
In addition to his position at STR.org, Noyes serves on the board of a classical, Christian school in the Thousand Oaks area and we were pleased to have someone of his caliber and likemindedness sharing with our community. He began with a very compelling testimony of his conversion from atheism. He then discussed what students could anticipate when leaving Trinity for higher education since the prevailing worldview on college campuses is Darwinism (or Darwinian evolution). He stated that there are 2-3 times more atheists on college campuses than in the culture at large. And the most frightening part is that Darwinism is more than scientific theory; it’s the basis for an ideology.
He posited three main arguments from three fields of study: Cosmology, Physics, and Biology. He began with the Kalam cosmological argument which states that "Everything that begins to exist has a cause. The universe began to exist. Therefore the universe has a Cause." To put it simply, “The Big Bang needs a 'Big Banger'.”
For Physics, the discussion was about the "Fine-tuning" argument and that the universe is fine-tuned or calibrated for life as we know it. If everything wasn't exactly as it is, we couldn't exist on planet earth.
In Biology, Noyes addressed the 1953 discovery of DNA and how it changed everything. The realization that the average human body has so much microscopic information makes it hard to argue against a Designer. For example, the average human body has 100 trillion cells. DNA strands from each cell are about 9 feet long. If you uncoiled all the DNA strands from all the cells in the body, it would stretch from here to the sun and back again 70 times! Not only is the size massive, but so much information is stored in DNA - the equivalent of 8 billion letters. Bill Gates once said that "DNA is far more advanced than any software we’ve ever created."
Noyes was a very engaging speaker with great information to share. Coming from the perspective of someone who was an atheist for 26 years, the message was powerful and intelligent. He had found compelling evidence that Jesus was who He said He was, and that required a response of belief and worship. His passion for Christ was evident in his presentation and the students and teachers alike were blessed to hear from Jonathan Noyes.
